Burton was born in South Africa but has been capped for the Scottish U-21's. He started his career at St Mirren then moved down south to join Blackburn Rovers. After spending two years in the reserves, Burton signed for Livingston. He played 99 games and scored 15 goals for Livi and won the League Cup in 2004. O'Brien joined Sheffield Wednesday in 2005 and also played 99 games for them before signing for the Bairns in June 2008.

South Africa tried to get him in their squad for the last World Cup Qualifying Campaign but lost in their bid to get him as he didn't have a proper South African passport.
