MY DAY AT SCOTSPORT

After seeing my Match preview videos on this website, the Scotsport Production team invited me along to the Scotsport studio at Pacific Quay in Glasgow to see how they put their show together. I visited the studios on April the 7th, the same day as Falkirk played Aberdeen and it was the ONLY thing that would keep me away from a Falkirk match.

I arrived at the studio at 2pm and had to squeeze through the crowd of girls who were waiting to see X Factor winner Shayne Ward, who was appearing  live on STV's five thirty show.

I was met in the reception by producer Martyn Bon, who took me upstairs and introduced me to the rest of the crew. After meeting everyone, we went for a production meeting where they discussed the running order of the show and the time given to each match and analysis. As they were running a bit short on time, some highlights had to be scrapped. Alessandra (Ali) was the girl that went to the Gretna v Inverness game. She took me into the editing room and cut about 45 seconds of her previously edited highlights. David McKinney then came into the room and put the graphics onto the Hearts v Kilmarnock match.

Me with Andy Walker and the SPL Trophy

After I had clicked the button to make the "Stephen Frail" sign go away on his interview, Ali asked me if I'd like to interview Scotsport presenters Andy Walker and Grant Stott. They brought a cameraman in with all the proper equipment to film me! During the interview Andy told me about how his transfer to Falkirk broke down and Grant spoke about Hibs. Grant promised to give travellingbairn a "plug" on his radio show. This interview is on this site
HERE Then I went down and watched the five thirty show in the gallery. The gallery is where everything is controlled during a programme. And it's where the people inform the presenters how long to go until they're on air.

After that, we had another meeting. This one was a script meeting where Grant and Andy read out their scripts and Andrea Brownlie (Series Producer) said what sounded right and what didn't. When it came to the end of the meeting, Andrea booked us into an Italian restaurant just round the corner which was really nice of them. After dinner, I watched the first 20 minutes of the Falkirk match on a massive TV screen before going into the Scotsport studio to see Grant and Andy do their promos. I got a few pictures taken in the studio and saw the SPL trophy. The Scotsport studio is the same studio as the five thirty show and Scottish News, and because it's such a tight fit between the news and the programme, Scotland Today is broadcasted at the other side of the room so they just swing the cameras round.

Where the matches are edited

When the Falkirk game had finished, we went upstairs and had a chat with Ali and Stefanie (another girl in the Scotsport team) about random things to do with football. Stefanie took me down to Setanta on the ground floor. It was quite small and the editing equipment wasn't very big. She took me into the gallery for Rangers and Celtic TV and then into the library of tapes, going back to the early 90's.  Me and my dad headed back up to the gallery for the live show as nobody is allowed to go into the studio during a show apart from the presenters/guests.

Not even cameramen are allowed in as the cameras are robotic and controlled by a remote in the gallery. The director for the day, Cliff, told me what all the abbreviations ("Telly Talk") meant just before Scotsport started.

After the live show had finished, Andrea gave me a STV ball, which everyone signed. Then we came out of the building with Stefanie and made our way home back to Falkirk.
