John Hughes had
told Falkirk to be ready for a backlash from
a Rangers side who were kicked out of Europe
by FBK Kaunas just a few days earlier. And
in the first 10 minutes of the match, they
pressured Falkirk and had several chances
for a goal.
During that
spell, they appealed for a red card to be
given to Darren Barr when he hauled down
Kris Boyd just outside the box, but the
referee gave the correct decision and let
play go on.
Falkirk's
first chance fell to Michael Higdon when
Scott Arfield's miss-hit shot fell to his
feet, but because he wasn't expecting it,
his shot went miles over the bar.
The Falkirk
fans were getting excited and even more so
when Allan McGregor failed to kick away a
speedy Christian Dailly pass-back and the
ball just trickled wide of the goal.
Falkirk went
into the break on top and had controlled
most of the play.

The Bairns
were awarded a penalty in the league for the
first time since the 1st of January 2007,
when Kevin McBride was tackled by Whittaker
inside the box. Michael Higdon stepped up
but McGregor saved to his left.
That got Rangers riled up and they went and
scored the first goal of the game.
Boyd flicked the ball onto Lafferty, who
skinned his man and crossed into the box for
Andrius Velcika, who had an easy tap
in.
